Zodiac Code Solved! Confession of the Zodiac Killer eBook Michael D. Sechrest, Tom Voigt Reviews
This book is AMAZING and a MUST READ!! Get your copy now, you will not be disappointed and will want to read it cover to cover.
I love Investigation discovery so this is right up my alley! Anyone interested in mysteries/ serial killers and the whole investigative process will want to read this book. Highly recommended!
I likely many crime buffs familiar with the Zodiac mystery went in skeptical and quite frankly assuming a mess because of the title and the lackluster reading that is out there book wise on the case. I must say I came away convinced that if the code was not broken then that $10K the author is offering for anyone to prove him wrong is up for grabs. I like how the author explains his thinking when using critical thinking skills to figure out the puzzle of Zodiac's identity, it makes for very intriguing reading but makes a lot of sense in my view. A few things that made me say nah no way that man was cleared but if the cipher that I believe Mr. Sechrest has indeed cracked is true, the well known suspect is likely the killer if not one of a couple involved. Books like this make you think which in true crime we need more of.
I suggest the author of this book read, "The hunt for the Zodiac" by Mike Rodelli and the " Great Zodiac Killer Hoax" by Thomas Henry Horan. These men used REAL EVIDENCE in their books. Not a misspelled middle name of Arthur LEIGH Allen in the middle of a cipher. Robert Graysmith is believed to have lied extensively about Mr. Allen, to the extent that Mr. Allen's family filed multiple lawsuits against both Graysmith and David Fincher for their portrayal of Mr. Allen. Not to mention that Mr. Allen DOES NOT FIT THE COMPOSITE DRAWING OF MR. STINE'S KILLER.
As many of the other higher-star reviews state, this is indeed a riveting account of how author, Michael D. Sechrest, went about solving the infamous Zodiac 340 cipher. The only problem is he didn’t solve the cipher, he merely managed to tease a few sentence fragments out of it. Nonetheless, this is an accomplishment of some merit. Perhaps he should have titled this book “Zodiac Code Partially Solved!â€
Let me back up a bit to make my case. When you are solving a puzzle, the first step is to decide, or have dictated for you, what a solution will look like. When we solve a common jigsaw puzzle, we know we have “solved†it when the puzzle has been totally assembled, and it forms the image shown on the cover of the puzzle’s box. We do not have that luxury with the Zodiac 340 cipher. For all we know, it could be a random collection of 64 symbols which forms no coherent message whatever. A practical joke of sorts the Zodiac was playing on the police and press.
Perhaps someday, on his death bed, the Zodiac will come forward and show us how to decipher the 340 as a last gesture of mercy on hundreds of perpetually frustrated cryptanalysts – amateur and professional alike. In the meantime suffer on Foolish Mortals!
Without such a definitive act, we may never have the luxury of knowing what the solution actually looks like, or how to go about deciphering it. Nonetheless, if there is a real, coherent message embedded in the cipher, we could reasonably expect it would resemble many other of the Zodiac’s communications, both ciphered and un-ciphered. There are numerous examples of his letters, taunts, and the three sections of the original 408 cipher. The Zodiac wrote coherent sentences that contained a subject, verb, direct & indirect objects, began with a capital letter and ended with a period. A credible decipherment of the 408 would look something like these precedents. Sechrest’s does not! Here is his “cracked†solution to the 408, taken verbatim from his book on pages 87 & 88
Seick People Do Liv in my mind I am iol and keep on killing Slaves Again Till yoo Like Alias Lee Myikado LEE ALLLN Von gave one I will go kil A good elf in a room Syciopals Heven
Coherent? Structured sentences with a message? I don’t think so.
Sechrest also offers a $10,000 prize to anyone who A) can proof he purchased the book, B) Adheres to Dr. Ryan Garlick’s ( a renowned cryptologist) rules for a credible solution of the 340, C) submits his solution to the FBI for authentication (is he kidding?), D) relinquishes all copyright rights to the decoded cipher to the benefit of Mr. Sechrest, and a dozen or so other requirements for winning the $10,000. All is described on pages 153 & 154 of the book. Believe me, it’ll be the hardest $10 Grand you ever made!
Speaking of Dr. Garlick’s rules of decipherment, Mr. Sechrest ignores most of them himself. Find & read Dr. Garlick’s simple four page paper “How to know you haven’t solved the Zodiac 340 codeâ€, and you’ll see what I mean.
I anxiously await Mr. Sechrest’s forthcoming follow-up book “Zodiac Code Finally Fully Solvedâ€. Keep working Mr. Sechrest, I think you have made a good start at solving the 340, but you are not there yet.
I would have given the book a 2-star rating, however Mr. Sechrest committed one of the greatest Cardinal Sins of Non-Fiction Works – NO INDEX !!!!!! Shame on him.
I have read most of the Zodiac books, all claiming to have solved the case. Most are fascinating and written by reliable sources. I first read The Zodiac Killer Cover-Up The Silenced Badge written by a retired CHiPs officer. Unfortunately, author Lyndon Lafferty never reveals the real name of his suspect, so it's difficult to know what to think. Lafferty says the NSA cracked The Zodiac's code, and the findings were the same as the suspect Lafferty was eyeing. But, with no real names to confirm. and Lafferty having passed a few years ago, there's no definitive way to know if he was correct.
I also read the frightening The Most Dangerous Animal of All Searching for My Father . . . and Finding the Zodiac Killer. I find this book the most believable, simply because the author had no intentions of solving this case, and stumbled onto it while searching for his biological parents. The suspect's background in ciphers, his motives for targeting Paul Avery, the fingerprint evidence and cipher revelations make for a strong case.
I also read Most Evil II Presenting the Follow-Up Investigation and Decryption of the 1970 Zodiac Cipher in which the San Francisco Serial Killer Reveals his True Identity. In this book, retired LAPD detective Steve Hotel claims his father was the Black Dahlia killer AND the Zodiac, despite his father's thin, small build and wiry black hair being completely opposite of the two documented eyewitness physical descriptions of the Zodiac. The author also claims to have debunked the above book via handwriting samples, but as I've learned from law enforcement, handwriting samples are an inexact science at best. Therefore, I don't believe this book has solved the case.
Zodiac Unmasked The Identity of America's Most Elusive Serial Killers Revealed, written by Robert Graysmith is purported to be the definitive Zodiac book. Graysmith goes into great detail describing the activity of his suspect, also named an alias. This book is remarkable in that it gives much background on the author's favorite suspect, and the book was also the basis for the Zodiac feature film of 2007. It makes a strong case for the same suspect as Sechrest's book.
While claiming to have identified the real Zodiac, none of the above books have solved the mysterious "340" cipher, which the Zodiac said contained his name. This cipher, sent after two schoolteachers solved his first cipher, was probably much more complex than the first cipher, explaining why it has taken 47 years to solve.
In this book. Michael Sechrest says he has solved the "340" cipher. Sechrest is an attorney who worked on the 340 cipher using an application which replicates human trial and error at a much faster rate, completing possible solution scenarios in minutes, instead of days. I bought this book b/c Sechrest was confident he'd cracked the cipher, and it was such a riveting book I stayed up all night reading it. Sechrest lays it out step by step how he solved the mysterious ciphers AND OFFERS a $10K reward for anyone providing a more believable solution. Using logical and deductive thinking, Sechrest relies on over 45 years of hindsight. His conclusion sort of surprised me, but when I thought about the testimony by the suspect's friends, as well as the countless hours of trial and error, I believe Sechrest has solved the cipher key, wherein Zodiac reveals his true name. (I won't spoil the surprise.) IMHO this book is the most cogent, logical presentation of facts concerning this case.
Seems like it must be the key.
