Usually when I read a book by P & C, I can't put it down. For this one I had to slog through to the end. It felt lazy. It's the last book in the series and it feels like they were just phoning it in.
Very disappointing. An isolated group in a mountain valley descended from ancient Egyptians, totally untouched my modern technology and culture -- in this age of global satellite surveillance? And the scene mimicking David and Goliath? Silly.
I've read and enjoyed all of the Gideon Crew novels, but this one is definitely the best! I live in the desert Southwest which is very similar to the climate in Egypt. It was very easy for me to get into the story when the guys were stranded without supplies. I got so thirsty while Gideon and Manuel were digging, that I had to stop and get a drink . I've also always been an Egyptology nut, so I really got into the "finding the tomb" thing. Great story guys. Just sorry it's the last of this series.
Being spoiled by the Pendergast series, then came Gideon, the intrepid world adventurer working for a strange and mostly unlikeable wealthy Eli on projects that are beyond belief. Spoiler then we learn that Gideon has a terminal illness that is not treatable. I have struggled to really like Gideon, for me it is a bit lukewarm. So in this latest, Gideon and his friend Garza, are out of jobs as the strange Eli fires them, and everyone, and his strange company is dismantled. However the two find something of Eli's some kind a key suggests a world changing discovery connected to ancient Egypt and the Pharaohs. Spoiler Gideon's illness is spreading and he has only weeks to live. What does he do? Goes on a life-threatening quest to learn the Pharaoh Key, even though he and Garza go brave enormous odds like searing desert heat, sand storms, a sinking ferry, lack of water, and captured by a strange and unknown village of people. If I had only a few weeks to live, this kind of adventure would not have been my choice. But this is Gideon. It is entertaining. The sudden secret place where the villagers live is fascinating. At times this dragged and there was too much in all of the desert action. The ending about the villagers seems a big stretch. It is fun. But I think I am ready for Gideon to have some rest. Maybe some treatment will be found for Gideon if there is another book.
After reading numerous reviews of the newest Gideon Crew novel, I decided to read The Pharaoh Key despite the negative reviews. I am glad I did for a couple of reasons ... To continue of streak of reading every book both writers have written and to see if the reviews were correct. I enjoy the outstanding journey that the writers brought us along with Gideon. Love when books bring the reader to new worlds to meet new people. I also enjoy when non fiction and fiction are mixed to challenge the reader to look into new information. Enjoyed the book from page one to the final page and cannot wait for the next Preston and Child book.
Don’t fret too much about the spoilers here because the authors have already spoiled the book. Let’s start by cutting to the chase. To lure in buyers, the book is hyped with the discovery of a world-altering secret. Close to the end, one character does unearth it, but refuses to divulge it to others, and worse, to you. This is bush league of the highest order.

The lame attempt to justify this is the the character doesn’t want to burden Gideon (protagonist) with the terrible truth. He has a fatal illness and a couple weeks to live. How much of a burden could that be? Pure nonsense.

The basic plot is that Gideon and Manuel are undertaking a dangerous exploratory mission, in search of riches that may be held by an undiscovered tomb of a pharaoh. You have weeks to live and you’re going to burn them on this? Along the way, they stumble into situations of certain death, only to be saved by banal improbable escapes. A woman imposes herself into their expedition and they are enslaved by a primitive tribe. Insert an assortment of hackneyed events of the great white explorers being captured, accepted and then revered.

Then, there are the contradictions. As example, once enslaved, they are assigned tasks. It is noted that, even though Gideon is a fair shot with the tribe’s bow and arrows, he isn’t included in the hunting parties. Within a few pages later, our heroes are plotting their escape and assessing their chances. It comes up in their discussion that the tribe possesses only primitive weapons and doesn’t even have bows and arrows. How was it determined that Gideon could shoot the tribe’s bows and arrow when they don’t even have them?

As for reviews that lament the end of the Gideon Crew series, don’t bet on it. If true to form, this is buyer bait and look for a pulling-a-rabbit-out-of-the-hat explanation of his return.

While there are parts that entertain, the undelivered promises do not merit a reward by reading it.
I am always excited when my favorite authors latest release is available. I always enjoy reading their latest creation. Though it was fun to read I was able to anticipate everything that was about to happen, even the ending. As one reviewer said perhaps I have come to expect too much and so this was ok but disappointing. It was also short. I like to immerse myself in one of their Pendergast novels and hold on tight for a longer journey. I feel sad to criticize these amazing writers.
