I really enjoyed Kate and Dylan’s story. The banter, chemistry, and all were quite well done. The idea that Kate would be so principled and above it all in face of what she received was pretty unbelievable and I mean that in a I rolled my eyes and said, sure she would (being a bit vague here to ensure no spoilers). My biggest complaint, if you could call it that was the utter inaccurate description of Charleston and it’s surroundings. Plus, the “southernisms” were a bit much at time and somewhat on the hokey side. Being both from this area and Southern myself, I feel I can speak with a bit of authority on the subject. But, yes I get literary license and as a result, usually avoid books set in the area in order to avoid this very circumstance but alas, it was part of the series and thus necessary to read.
Again, my criticisms are my own and quite specific to me so I judged the book for its characters, plot, and general story. As a result, it earned four stars from me.

Slow Burn A Novel BuchananRenard Julie Garwood Books Reviews
I love Julie Garwoods characters and dialog. Her female characters are the right blend of femininity, fun, and strength. With Julie Garwoods books, you can grab a cup of tea and totally relax in a well written, well paced, enjoyable read.
I like the 3 sisters interacting with each other. This murder mystery I didn't figure out until closer to the end which made it a page turner. Julie Garwood has a great imagination! Love reading her books.
I enjoyed this book very much. It has just enough suspense and mystery to keep you intrigued, but not so much as to overwhelm the developing love story between Kate McKenna and Dylan Buchanan. This book, much like many of Ms. Garwood's books on romance, features a woman who knows her own value and worth, but recognize her need to have the insights and protection of a man, especially after she seems to be having some bad luck involving bombs exploding near her. She has unknowingly become the target of an assassin. It is only after two attempts on her life failed that she comes to the conclusion that someone wants her dead. She shares her concerns with her friend Jordan Buchanan, who sends her brother Dylan down to help her figure out what is happening to her and why. It is a very enjoyable read.
Just when she gets out of college, exactly one year after her mother's death, there are multiple attacks against the heroine and her business. A cancer scare, a passel of horrible relatives, shocking revelations by her mother's accountant, and a late-night visit from her sister's violent ex-boyfriend, bring a visit from her best friend's hot brother. This book is filled with romance, liberally sprinkled with laugh out loud humor, and packed with action. You won't want to put it down!
I have read a lot of Julie Garwood books and liked most of them. This book wasn't bad but could have been better. Isabel was a real airhead and someone should have clobbered her a time or two to get her attention. The romance between Dylan and Kate was okay but she did too much dithering and acting like she was also seventeen like Isabel. Keira had the potential to be an interesting character but unfortunately she was mostly background scenery. How anyone could get blown up twice and not be smart enough to figure out that she was in trouble and should lock her doors is unbelievable. Also no one with a house that badly needed repairs, mountainous medical bills for their mother, two sisters, one starting college and one still interning to become a doctor and a business in trouble would be dumb enough to give away all of the inherited money, no matter if the person she inherited it from was a greedy dislikeable old man. Kate could have helped her sisters, taken care of bills and what not and still given a lot of money to charity. I don't think anyone would have thought she was a bad guy for keeping a few bucks for herself and family. Just made the story really unbelievable.
I've always loved Julie Garwood's contemporary romantic suspense books mostly because she writes intelligent plots with strong heroines and realistic relationships. But I have a special respect for her books Slow Burn and Ideal Man.
Lots of action, unexpected peril and red herrings in this one. Slow Burn really keeps you guessing who the bad guy is and what could possibly happen next.
After reading the whole Buchanan series to that point, I was glad to see Dylan as the lead this time. I was wondering about him. He is a genuine, stand up guy who appreciates the same kind of character in others. I couldn't think of anyone better for Kate!
My favorite thing about Slow Burn is what Ms Garwood allows us to hear in the thoughts of our heroine, Kate. Her inner debates are quite extensive and usually pretty funny too. She does something for what she thinks are the right reasons only to be not so sure after she does them. She is a totally in charge when it comes to business, but not so much when it comes to relationships. Bless her heart!
I've been reading this series as stand alones, I'm on my third- not reading them in any order, just when they go on sale. Each book is different, all are very good. This book has a great deal of humor along with the suspense and a cute romance.
