Mary Monster Love Madness and How Mary Shelley Created Frankenstein Lita Judge Books
WOW! This was a great read. It was at once dark and sad, yet hopeful and uplifting. Poor Mary. She had so much tragedy in her life, yet she held on to her love for Percy Bysshe Shelley and her children. Lita Judge captures young Mary and paints her with words so the reader feels the angst of her early years, her journeys with Shelley and Claire, the the ultimate success of writing a novel that had to be published with the author’s name listed as Anonymous, because it was thought no one would read a novel such as this if it was discovered a female had penned it. Fabulous job, Ms. Judge.Tags : Amazon.com: Mary's Monster: Love, Madness, and How Mary Shelley Created Frankenstein (9781626725003): Lita Judge: Books,Lita Judge,Mary's Monster: Love, Madness, and How Mary Shelley Created Frankenstein,Roaring Brook Press,1626725004,Biography & Autobiography - Literary,Biography & Autobiography - Women,Authors, English - 19th century,Authors, English.,Biographical poetry,Free verse,Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft,Women authors;Biography;Juvenile poetry.,Women;Biography.,138401 Roaring Brook-RB TC,Biography,Biography & Autobiography Women,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),JUVENILE,Juvenile Grades 10-12 Ages 15+,Juvenile Non-Fiction,TEEN'S BIOGRAPHY LITERARY,TEEN'S GIRLS AND WOMEN,United States,YOUNG ADULT NONFICTION,YOUNG ADULT NONFICTION Biography & Autobiography Literary,YOUNG ADULT NONFICTION Biography & Autobiography Women,Young Adult NonfictionBiography & Autobiography - Women,Mary Shelly; Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley; Frankenstein books; Frankenstien; the creation of Frankenstein; biographies of female writers; women writers; feminist books for teens; women in literature; Percy Bysshe shelley; Lord Byron; Romantic poets; science fiction writer biography; first female science fiction writer; first science fiction novel; first horror novel; classic writers; books about teen pregnancy; books about overcoming obstacles; teen books about abusive relationships; books about resilient teenagers; books to develop resiliency; narrative nonfiction; poetry biography; free verse biography; free verse poetry; young adult biographies; young adult biography; young adult free verse,Mary Shelly; Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley; Frankenstein books; Frankenstien; the creation of Frankenstein; biographies of female writers; women writers; feminist books for teens; women in literature; Percy Bysshe shelley; Lord Byron; Romantic poets; science fiction writer biography; first female science fiction writer; first science fiction novel; first horror novel; classic writers; books about teen pregnancy; books about overcoming obstacles; teen books about abusive relationships; books about resilient teenagers; books to develop resiliency; narrative nonfiction; poetry biography; free verse biography; free verse poetry; young adult biography; young adult free verse; young adult biographies
Mary Monster Love Madness and How Mary Shelley Created Frankenstein Lita Judge Books Reviews
In a word, this book is AMAZING. Lita Judge has created a masterpiece about a masterpiece! The poetic writing & haunting illustrations bring her research on Mary Shelley to life so beautifully. Using letters, diaries, and historic biographies Judge retells the story of Mary's troubled life from her birth that resulted in her mother's death, to being sent away by a wicked stepmother, to falling in love with a married man whose creative genius was rivaled by his madness, to the conception and creation of Frankenstein's monster. Judge weaves this this gothic tale as a graphic novel in verse that evokes an eerie mood and irresistible page turning. Definitely for older readers as it deals with painful issues of teen pregnancy, infidelity, mental illness, and child abuse/neglect. Find out the true story of a pregnant teenage runaway who was able to pen the most famous horror story of all time.
Who knew? What a wonderful (true) story of her life and challenges.
Lite Judge's poetic writing, along with her haunting illustrations really capture Mary Shelley's life and imagination. I really love this book, and am sure I will look at it over and over- just beautiful!
I liked it but I didn't realize it was more like a graphic novel it didn't go in very much detail
This is a good and interesting book. The reader learns what Mary’s life was like (pretty dreadful), and the influences on her that could have led her to create Frankenstein. The graphic images made it something that my daughter (a teen with dyslexia) enjoyed also.
Here's one of those books I think I will find myself turning to again and again. I read it in one fast gulp. The amazing combination of Lita's art interspersed with text is thoroughly entrancing. It draws you painfully close to Mary Shelle and her monsters, real and fictional. My heart ached for her, but I was equally moved by her resilience. I can't say enough about the art. It floored me. Highly recommended.
What a fabulous and unique idea, what an amazing read. Beautifully illustrated and so emotionally charged, this gorgeous hardcover graphic novel honestly tells the concise and heartbreaking biography of the life of Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, The Last Man and a few other works, and breaks all the barriers of the typical graphic experience with poetry, struggle and raw emotions. We see what truly were Mary's Monsters and what circumstances created her own unique personality, lifestyle, as well as all the heartbreaking events in her life. It is one of those books that just makes you want more, and I hope this author will consider doing others...perhaps Emily Dickinson, George Eliot, Louisa May Alcott, the Brontes. Gracious, I would buy them all in a heartbeat! I just finished a bio on Mary Shelley and a reread of Frankenstein. This was the perfect read to finish out a trio of honoring Mary Shelley. Discovered it by 's recommendation list. So glad I indulged!
