Queen Margot Miramax Book Alexandre Dumas Books

Several years ago I had come across an on-line entry of the book Margeurite de Valois. Since my family had been French Huguenot and had to flee France for Holland in the late 1500's, I had started reading it and enjoyed it immensely. Then, suddenly,I was no longer able to find it. Therefore, I was thrilled to find the book, Queen Margot, for sale on Amazon and, with the excellent summary provided, I realized it was the same story I had enjoyed. It tells the story of the French Queen, Margeurite, (Margot in the book), whose loyalties were in conflict between her mother, Catherine, and her husband Henri de Navarre. The story closely parallels actual French history at at time when men spent their days hunting or practising fencing etc. when not engaged in war, while women like Catherine plotted the murders of rivals to the crown, engaged in affairs and held lavish parties. The story is set in Paris mainly in the royal palace known as the Louvre, the royal palace we now know as the famous art gallery. It begins at the time of Queen Margot's marriage, the occasion which prompts the murder of a large number of Huguenots, gathered in Paris for the wedding of their Henri in St. Bartholomew, across from the Louvre. The massacre was orchestrated by the Queen mother, Catherine, who had previously poisoned the mother of Henri of Navarre. The book has been made into a movie and I look forward to seeing it.

Queen Margot Miramax Book Alexandre Dumas Books Reviews

No none has ever written swashbuckling stories as well as Alexandre Dumas. In my opinion, his Three Muskateers series is at the pinnacle of that genre. Queen Margot has a lot going for it. The setting of the story during the French Wars of Religion is interesting and is off the beaten historical track for most American readers. As characters Queen Margot, Henri IV and Catherine Medici are all fascinating and hold the reader's interest. My problem with Queen Margot is that Dumas builds a great story up to a not so thrilling conclusion. By tying himself to real characters set in French history, there is only so much Dumas could do. For those who like historical fiction set during the fascinating French Wars of Religion period, I would recommend Robert Merle's "Fortunes of France" series.
This is a historical drama loosely based on facts. It is the story of Marguerite of Valois the daughter of Henri II and Catherine de Medici. It takes place during her brother Charles IX reign. It is a tale of intrigue and romance.

Marguerite or Margot as she is known is the most beautiful woman in France and her mother devises a scheme to marry her to Henri of Navarre a Protestant in order to bring him under Catherine’s control.

The story revolves around an astrological forecast that Catherine receives about all three of her sons reigning as King in France but also Henri of Navarre. She decides she must stop this from ever happening, as she is a staunch Catholic, the niece of Popes.

Margot is a pawn in this game. She does not love her new husband, but she does believe that as his wife she should protect him from her family. Repeatedly, she thwarts her mother and brother’s attempts at having Henri assassinated. In the meantime, she falls in love with La Mole, a soldier and Protestant. He asks her if he dies in her service to cut off his head and keep it with her always, a promise she one day may have to keep.

Henri has a mistress, who is a lady in waiting to Catherine de Medici. She becomes someone the Queen mother tries out a new poison on, but is outwitted by Henri.

The story involves the St. Bartholomew’s Massacre and various other deaths orchestrated by the Queen Mother. Her perfumer is also her poisoner as he is a chemist first.

There was a wonderful 1994 movie “La Reine Margot” with Isabelle Adjani as Margot that follows the plot and I recommend.

Alexander Dumas is more famous for his “Three Musketeers” and “Count of Monte Cristo”, but this novel is one of my favorites.
It gives sight into French history in an in entertaining way. It is a difficult subject to understand but characters are
easily understood. I recommend it with every film viewer. Linda Samuel Trevino
This is a lesser know Alexandre Dumas classic novel about a sluttissh French princess who redeems herself by trying to save 6,000 protestants massacred in Paris (true story)
If you like romance and you can deal with unhappy end is highly reccomended read.
